New Super Mario Bros. Mii started as a tech demo for the Wii U at E3 2011. It took the core gameplay from New Super Mario Bros. Wii and let players use their Miis instead of the usual characters. The main goal was to show off the GamePad screen so you could play without looking at a TV. You got about ten minutes to explore new levels before the demo reset automatically. This setup let people test how moving the action to the handheld controller felt during a standard platformer run. The project eventually grew into New Super Mario Bros. U, but the demo itself had a specific purpose. It proved that you could keep playing while the TV was off or used for something else. The community data shows this feature became a staple for later Wii U releases. Players who tried it then knew they were looking at how Nintendo planned to handle portable play on a console system. That ten-minute window gave everyone a clear idea of what the hardware could actually do in practice.
