LEVEL-5 created this role-playing adventure with help from Studio Ghibli for a story about a boy named Oliver searching for his mom in a magical world. Bandai Namco released the Remastered version on September 20, 2019 across PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch and PC. You explore dozens of locations while taming hundreds of creatures. The visual upgrade lets PS4 players hit 60 frames per second at 1080p resolution or switch to true 4K on the Pro model. Joe Hisaishi scored the whole thing with his usual touch. This is a single-player experience that blends real-time combat with tactical turns rather than just walking around looking pretty.
You control Oliver as he moves through the world with his wizard companion Drippy. Combat feels different from standard RPGs because you switch between direct action and pausing to issue commands to your party of familiars. You catch monsters in the wild, name them and build their stats so they fight alongside you. Exploration involves solving puzzles and talking to townsfolk to unlock new areas. The game tracks 33 achievements but only a tiny fraction of players finish them all. Most people spend hours just hunting specific creatures for their collection. Controls remain tight whether you use a controller on console or keyboard on PC.
PlayPile data shows this title holds a Metacritic score of 84 out of 100 which reflects strong critical reception. Community members report an average playtime that varies wildly depending on how many side quests they chase. Only 13.6% of players unlock the rare Mad Scientist achievement while just 1.6% manage to get it on their first try. The general mood stays positive with players praising the art style and music constantly. Some reviews note the price point drops as low as $8.74 at GameBillet making it an easy buy for budget gamers. Most users agree the 60fps mode makes a noticeable difference compared to the original release.
This game works best for players who enjoy collecting monsters and listening to great music over tight combat mechanics. The achievement system offers little challenge for veterans since only 13.6% of people unlock most medals. You can grab it cheap at $8.74 without feeling ripped off. Avoid this if you hate turn-based tactics or want a fast-paced shooter. Oliver's journey feels complete after the main story ends so there is no reason to keep playing once credits roll unless you care about filling your monster encyclopedia.
