Nibbles is a fast-paced arcade game where you steer a growing serpent through a grid, gobbling numbered tiles to extend its length. Each number you eat makes the snake longer and the challenge trickier as you dodge walls, obstacles, and your own tail. The goal is to clear all numbers on the board to unlock the next level which ramps up the speed and complexity. A second player can join using a shared keyboard to control a separate snake creating chaotic collisions and split-screen mayhem. The game gained traction in the early 90s as a free QBasic demo bundled with MS-DOS 5.0. Its clever use of text characters and color tricks turned basic terminal screens into playable grids. Though modern PCs struggle with the original’s timing loops, DOSBox or QB64 let it run smoothly. Nibbles has no fancy graphics or complex story but its simple mechanics and tight controls made it a staple for DOS users. Retro fans still highlight its addictive difficulty and the joy of outlasting a serpent that’s literally your own making.
