Night at the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian is a third person action-adventure game where you play Larry Daley a security guard who must defend the Smithsonian from history’s most notorious villains. The museum’s exhibits come to life at night forcing you to team up with characters like Teddy Roosevelt Amelia Earhart and a talking octopus to stop a takeover by Napoleon Ivan the Terrible and others. Combat blends platforming puzzles and timed button mashes as you swing chandeliers punch through displays and use each ally’s quirks to progress. The game splits its time between frantic fights and lighthearted dialogue with a cast of anthropomorphic artifacts. The humor leans into absurdity with jokes about historical inaccuracies and slapstick gags that work best in the 2009 movie it’s based on. While the controls feel dated by modern standards the sheer volume of references to real museum exhibits and pop culture nods keeps it engaging. Early reviews noted the game’s charm struggles to match the film’s energy but fans of the franchise appreciate the cameos and over-the-top set pieces. It’s a short ride but the 8 hour campaign moves quickly with plenty of visual gags for younger players.
