Nihilumbra casts you as Born, a being forged from emptiness who dodges threats and manipulates environments using color. Each of the five worlds grants a new hue that you apply by touching surfaces, altering terrain and solving puzzles. Early on you can’t fight foes only outrun them while learning how paint affects physics and movement. The levels grow tighter as you balance speed and creativity to survive. Its hand-drawn visuals and minimalist sound design create a haunting atmosphere. The story ties your progress to a cycle of creation and destruction as the Void erases everything you touch. With over 100 levels and a runtime of roughly six hours community reviews highlight its meditative pacing and clever level design. Available on 11 platforms including Switch and mobile it maintains a dedicated following despite its 2012 release.
Nihilumbra follows the story of Born, who was created from the Void, the nothingness. When he abandons it and appears in the world, he sets up on a long journey where he will learn how to use the colours around him, grating him powerful abilities. The Void from which Born escaped reclaims him, and it will never stop chasing him, devouring everything on its path. As Born runs for his life, he condemns the beautiful places he visits, as the Void makes them vanish forever.
