Ninja Assault is a rail shooter where two ninjas battle through demon-filled levels in feudal Japan. Players use a stationary setup to aim and shoot at enemies, with mechanics requiring shooting away from the screen to reload. The PlayStation 2 version adds GunCon 2 support for pointing-and-shooting action. Each level sends Guren and Gunjo closer to rescuing Princess Koto from a resurrecting demon shogun, with co-op play letting partners take turns or team up for shared ammo and health. The game stands out for its straightforward co-op design and arcade roots. Its on-rails formula prioritizes rapid enemy waves and boss fights over complex navigation. While not as iconic as Namco’s Time Crisis series, it retains a cult following for its dual-player synergy and GunCon 2 integration. Launched in arcades in 2000 before moving to PlayStation 2 in 2002, it remains a niche entry for fans of classic rail shooters.
Once upon a time, in feudal Japan, a seemingly endless war had broken out. And now, the demon shogun Kigai has kidnapped Princess Koto as a sacrifice for his resurrection. But two ninja (named Guren and Gunjo) have arrived as humanity's last hope. Together they travel the demon-infested country to find Kigai, stop him from sacrificing Princess Koto, and save her at all costs. And thus a new war had spawned, humanity versus the demon race.
