About

Ninja JaJaMaru-kun is a 1985 platformer where you play a young ninja tasked with rescuing a princess while his brother is away. The game tasks you with clearing stages filled with four floors of enemies, each stage ending only when all foes are defeated. You move left to right, avoiding projectiles and using shurikens to chip away at enemies. Stomping foes stuns them temporarily, but you need to eliminate them offscreen to earn points from their floating spirits. Power-ups like invincibility boosts and speed-enhancing items appear in breakable blocks, and collecting specific combinations triggers game-changing effects like summoning a giant frog to clear enemies. The bonus stage flips the formula, pitting you against Damazu in a vertical projectile duel. The game stands out for its tight, methodical level design and the clever use of risk/reward mechanics. Collecting Sakura’s petals and managing power-up chains adds depth to simple platforming. Though initially exclusive to Japan, it found new life on Wii Virtual Console and Nintendo Switch Online, introducing retro fans to its quirky charm. Early reviews praised its challenge and creativity for a budget title, and its inclusion in modern compilations shows its lasting appeal among niche platformer enthusiasts.
