Nursery Rhyme is a visual novel following Shizuma Hasekura as he navigates school life in a world where magic exists alongside everyday routines. Set 500 years after a previous story’s events, the game blends futuristic elements with traditional Japanese culture. Magic users wear rings to control their abilities while blending into society. Shizuma reconnects with his childhood friend Makina at a prestigious all-girls school where magic and academics coexist. The cast includes rivals, quirky classmates, and four heroines with distinct traits ranging from a tsundere heiress to a shy elf. The game stands out for its mix of schoolyard drama and fantastical touches like talking stuffed animals and magical sports. While the premise leans into dated tropes, the character dynamics and light-hearted tone have earned it a niche following. Released in 2005 by Lump of Sugar, it remains a curio for fans of early 2000s visual novels. The setting’s fusion of advanced magic and unchanging traditions feels oddly consistent with its roots.
The player assumes the role of Shizuma Hasekura, a sensible teenager who, while his parents are working overseas, is visiting his energetic childhood friend Makina Tomoe. She is talented at sports such as Sophilos, although her grades are suffering. Makina has an older twin sister called Yukina Tomoe, who is more mature than Makina. She enjoys gardening, and is skilled at cooking. Shizuma meets spoiled rich girl Tita Flawless Brandt. She is a tsundere, and is in constant competition with the twins. The last two heroines are Krile Shikishima, a genius with dog-like ears and a tail, and Rin Lim Venus, a shy and clumsy elf who is aiming to become a teacher.
