Octodad casts you as an octopus pretending to be human while juggling everyday tasks and family life. You guide his eight limbs through chores like folding laundry or driving a car, all while avoiding detection by his human wife and kids. Simple actions become chaotic as you stretch arms to grab objects, balance on furniture, or awkwardly hide your true form during dinner. The game leans into slapstick humor, with Octodad’s clumsy movements and the tension of being caught creating a lighthearted yet challenging experience. Developed by DePaul University students as a senior project, the game won a Student Showcase award at the 2011 Independent Games Festival. Its sequel, Dadliest Catch, later gained Steam Greenlight in 2014. Though freeware, Octodad remains a cult hit for its clever concept and polished execution. Its success helped launch Young Horses, Inc., the studio behind the sequel. The original’s charm lies in its simplicity, proving that a student project can leave a lasting mark without needing a big budget.
