About

One's Own Exile is a choice-driven visual novel where you help Sybil outrun pursuers by stripping away pieces of her past. As guards close in, players navigate a branching story where every decision peels back layers of her identity, replacing memories with new aliases. The gameplay hinges on sacrificing personal history to stay hidden, with outcomes shaped by what you choose to forget. Set in a stark, atmospheric world, the story unfolds through sparse dialogue and environmental storytelling, focusing on the tension between self-preservation and self-erasure. What lingers is the game's quiet emotional weight. Developed as a game jam prototype, it tackles heavy themes with restraint, asking when it becomes logical to abandon who you are. While brief, most sessions last under two hours, it earned a 78% approval rating on early access forums for its bold concept. The lack of combat or flashy set pieces makes the stakes feel intimate, with survival measured in lost childhood memories and severed relationships rather than bullets or health bars. Updog Software’s minimalist approach lets the moral dilemma breathe, making the hardest choice feel inevitable.

Storyline

One's Own Exile was initially developed for a Game Jam competition. It is a short narrative experience that tells the tale of Sybil, an outcast in the region where she lives, which when pursued by the local guards needs to find a way to escape a tragic fate by concealing her identity. The game reflects upon what builds one’s identity, values and memories. How painful it is to sacrifice everything you hold dear, if the purpose is survival? Which one is better: the pain of unceasing struggle or the death that follows failure?
