Oookuki is an adventure game set in the women’s quarters of Edo Castle where players spend most of their time wandering through sparse rooms and talking to characters to collect testimonies. The goal is to piece together a story about the shogun’s court, but progress feels sluggish due to frequent loading screens and unclear objectives. The trial at the end, where accumulated evidence determines one of several endings, can’t fully make up for the tedious gathering process. The game is remembered for its numerous flaws. Released in 2008 for PlayStation 2, it was criticized for unpolished visuals, awkward dialogue mixing modern slang with historical context, and a script riddled with typos and spelling mistakes. Text scrolls without a pause or log, making it hard to track conversations. Despite its ambitions, Oookuki became a cult example of a kusoge, Japanese slang for a poorly made game. Over time its notoriety has grown, though not for the right reasons.
