Oregon is a basic survival simulator for the Apple II that tasks you with navigating a cross-country journey through 1800s America. You manage resources like food, time, and health by making on-screen choices via keyboard inputs. The action unfolds with minimal text and very simple graphics limited to shooting sequences and a rudimentary map that tracks your progress along the route. Gameplay revolves around decision-making under pressure, balancing risk and reward for each leg of the trip. The 1980 version stands out as an early example of educational software from MECC, which later became a staple in school curriculum. While lacking the complexity of the 1985 update, this iteration preserves the stripped-down mechanics of its 1970s teletype predecessors. The crude map and sparse visuals highlight the technical limitations of early home computing. Released in December 1980, it was part of a bundle that became MECC’s most popular Apple II offering at the time.
