Oriental Blue: Ao no Tengai is a turn-based RPG set in a fantasy version of East Asia. You play as one of two teenagers tasked with stopping a threat to the fictional realm of Jipang, a setting inspired by medieval Japan. The game lets you choose between two protagonists, each with their own perspective on the conflict. Combat follows traditional RPG mechanics with a focus on strategy. Battles are resolved through a grid-based system where positioning and timing matter. The world map lets you travel between locations that draw from real-world cultures including China and Mongolia. Major fights against bosses don't end the game if you lose, instead they unlock alternate story paths that change how the conflict resolves. The game's biggest hook is its branching narrative structure. Decisions during key battles and dialogue moments create different outcomes without forcing a strict good/evil divide. This makes repeated playthroughs feel distinct even with the same character. The magic system adds another layer by letting you combine elemental attacks in specific sequences. While the Game Boy Advance hardware limits visual flair, the script and character interactions help keep the story engaging. Fans of branching narratives in RPGs might find this title worth exploring despite its dated presentation.
