Ozma Wars is a 1979 vertical scrolling shooter where you pilot a spacecraft battling aliens, meteors, and comets. Instead of lives, you manage a depleting energy gauge, taking damage pauses the action and drains a big chunk of it. Periodic motherships let you refill energy, creating a rhythm of survival and recovery. The game cycles through distinct stages with escalating threats before looping again, pushing you to prolong your run as long as possible. This title holds a place in arcade history as SNK's debut game and the second vertical shooter ever made. It pioneered the use of energy bars, a now-standard feature in action games. The game's monochrome graphics and shared hardware with Space Invaders led to some bootleg versions like Space Phantoms, which swapped enemies for insect-like designs. Played on the same systems as Space Invaders, its legacy includes quirky color overlays borrowed from earlier games. Released in December 1979, it’s a rare example of early arcade experimentation that still feels structurally bold.
