Phantom Gear drops you into the role of Josephine as she fights back against the Ocular Force cult. You control her through side-scrolling levels where you run, jump, and smash enemies with a combat suit built by Dr. Valentine. The gameplay mixes platforming challenges with fast-paced beat-em-up action as you clear out waves of soldiers trying to steal ancient tech. You play through single-player campaigns on PC or the Sega Mega Drive to see how far Josephine can go in this retro-styled adventure. The story behind the game adds real weight to the combat since your character is seeking revenge for her mother's death. Players have rated the title highly for its tight controls and satisfying weapon feel on both modern systems and classic consoles. The art style captures that distinct 16-bit era look without feeling like a cheap copy. It stands out because the action stays consistent while the narrative gives you a reason to care about every enemy you defeat. This indie effort feels complete right from the start screen to the final boss fight.
