Phase Zero is an unreleased action shooter that Hyper Image Productions built for the Atari Jaguar before it got cancelled in 1995. You pilot a windowless VTV hovertank named Hunter to fight against a rival group called The Collective on a foreign world. The game started as a top-down SNES project but shifted focus when the team moved to the Jaguar hardware. They used a custom heightmap method to handle the terrain rendering and designed the experience around local area network multiplayer sessions where friends could battle each other directly. This title stands out because it represents the only full project Hyper Image ever completed despite the game never hitting shelves. The development team prioritized LAN play over traditional single-player campaigns, which was a bold choice for that era of consoles. Many retro gaming fans track this title as a famous piece of lost history rather than a playable experience. It remains a curiosity for collectors who want to see what Hyper Image tried to achieve with their own rendering techniques before the project hit the cutting room floor.
