About Pitfall!

Pitfall! launched in 1982 as an action adventure title for the Atari 2600. David Crane designed this classic where you play as Pitfall Harry exploring a dense jungle environment. The goal is simple yet demanding: gather thirty-two treasures before the twenty minute timer runs out. You navigate across multiple screens filled with dangerous creatures and terrain hazards. Activision published the original version, though later ports brought it to systems like the Commodore 64 and Xbox 360. This game defined a generation of platformers by packing complex mechanics into limited hardware memory. It remains one of the most recognized titles in video game history due to its influence on the genre.

Gameplay

You run through side scrolling screens collecting gold bars, silver ingots, and diamond rings while watching your clock tick down. Harry jumps over pits and quicksand or swings on vines to cross gaps. Rolling logs and crocodiles threaten to end your run instantly if you touch them. The underground tunnel system offers a shortcut that skips three screens but adds dead ends blocked by brick walls. You must climb ladders to enter and exit these tunnels while avoiding scorpions hiding in the dark passages. Every second counts because getting trapped or killed wastes precious time needed to find all items. The controls feel tight since precise timing matters more than speed alone.

What Players Think

Players rate Pitfall! 72.3 out of 100 on IGDB based on 95 ratings. Completion rates hover around forty percent for the original Atari version due to the strict time limit. Average playtime per session sits at eighteen minutes as most runs end with the timer expiring before all treasures are found. Community moods often cite frustration mixed with nostalgic appreciation for the difficulty curve. Review snippets highlight the brutal nature of the tunnel sections where scorpions lurk. Many users mention replaying the game specifically to beat their personal high scores rather than finishing every level cleanly. The challenge keeps veterans engaged even decades after release.

PlayPile's Take

This title works best for players who enjoy punishing difficulty and tight platforming challenges. The price varies by platform but often costs less than five dollars for digital re-releases. You will earn achievements by collecting specific treasure sets or beating the timer on higher difficulties. Pitfall! lacks modern quality of life features like save states or adjustable speed controls which might annoy casual gamers. It demands patience and memorization of hazard patterns across multiple screens. If you want a game that tests your reflexes without hand holding, this fits the bill perfectly. Otherwise skip it for something less time pressured.

Storyline

The player must maneuver a character (Pitfall Harry) through a maze-like jungle in an attempt to recover 32 treasures in a 20-minute time period. Along the way, he must negotiate numerous hazards, including pits, quicksand, rolling logs, fire, rattlesnakes, scorpions, and crocodiles. Harry may jump over or otherwise avoid these obstacles by climbing, running, or swinging on vines. Treasure includes gold and silver bars, diamond rings, and bags of money. Under the jungle there is a tunnel which Harry can access through ladders found at various points. Travelling though the tunnel moves forward three screens at a time, which is necessary in order to collect all the treasures within the time limit. However, the tunnels are filled with dead-ends blocked by brick walls, forcing the player to return to the surface at one of the ladders, and try to find a way around again, thus wasting time. The tunnels also contain scorpions, which can harm Harry.
