Plutos is a vertical scroll shooter originally built for the Atari 7800 in the mid 80s. Players navigate six stages filled with enemies and bosses, each level either a distinct design or a palette swap. The core loop revolves around collecting and upgrading three weapon types dual guns spread fire and energy beams alongside an invincibility pickup. Single or two player modes can be selected via the difficulty switch. The gameplay feels tight with responsive controls and a focus on weapon customization over complex mechanics. This prototype languished unfinished for decades until source code discovery in 2008 let retro enthusiasts patch it to run on original hardware. Despite being unreleased it shows clear polish with a weapons system deeper than many contemporary shooters. Community efforts resurrected a near-complete project that could have expanded the 7800's library. While visuals are basic by modern standards the addictive weapon upgrades and co-op play make it a standout for retro arcade fans.
