Pokémon Green Version is a turn-based RPG where you explore the Kanto region, train creatures, and challenge rivals. You start in Pallet Town with a choice of three starter Pokémon then travel to catch, battle, and evolve over 150 species. Gym challenges test your strategy while collecting badges unlocks new areas. The game blends exploration and competition with a focus on team building. Single-player campaigns let you conquer the League while link cables enable trading and battles with friends. This early entry set the template for the franchise with its core loop of catching and training. Its influence is clear in later entries but the original charm holds up. Players often cite its simplicity and depth as key draws with retro communities still active. The 3DS Virtual Console release brought it to new audiences maintaining its status as a genre-defining title.
The player character starts out in Pallet Town. When the player character tries to leave the town without a Pokémon of their own, they are stopped in the nick of time by Professor Oak, who invites them to his lab. There, he gives them a Pokémon of their own and a Pokédex, telling them about his dream to make a complete guide on every Pokémon in the world. After the player character battles their rival and leaves the lab, they are entitled to win every Gym Badge, compete in the Pokémon League, and fulfill Oak's dream by catching every Pokémon.
