Popeye is a simple beat-em-up where you play the sailor trying to rescue Olive from Brutus. The Game & Watch device tracks your movements as Popeye dodges punches and lands counters on a seesaw-like pier. Timing is key when avoiding hits and striking back to push Brutus toward the ocean edge. Eating spinach cans dropped by Olive temporarily boosts Popeye’s strength, letting him power-punch the foe into the sky. Game B adds a swordfish element that can disrupt your rhythm if it lands a hit. The original 1981 Game & Watch version exists in two hardware models, PG-74 (tabletop) with C batteries and PG-92 (panorama) with LR44s. Nintendo produced 250,000 units for each model across North America and Europe. While the basic mechanics stay consistent, the physical design differences made the games feel distinct. The Popeye franchise’s enduring popularity helped these early handhelds become collectible, though gameplay remains a straightforward test of reflexes and timing.
