About

Power Drift is a high-speed kart racing game from 1988 that swaps realistic physics for pure arcade chaos. You choose a driver from 12 options and battle through five tracks with five stages each, racing dune buggies across urban streets, deserts, and waterways. The goal is simple: stay ahead of the pack, avoid collisions, and finish in the top three to advance. Each stage forces quick decisions, crash into obstacles and you’ll lose ground, but brake too much and you’ll let rivals pass. The mechanics are straightforward but tense, with a focus on reflexes over strategy. What sets Power Drift apart is its technical ambition for the era. Built on Sega’s Y Board hardware, it used rotating and scaling sprites to create dynamic, pseudo-3D visuals that felt cutting-edge at the time. Designed by Yu Suzuki, the game was praised for its vibrant style and tight controls, factors that helped it thrive in arcades. It later spread to home platforms including DOS, Amiga, and Sega Saturn, with its 1998 Saturn port serving as the first console release. Despite its age, the game’s blend of risk-reward racing and quirky character choices keeps it memorable for retro fans.

Storyline

Ever wanted to race dune buggies at high speed on a variety of tracks? Power Drift is an arcade racer that gives you the chance to do just that. There are 5 tracks to choose from, each with 5 stages. The stages range from cities, to deserts to tracks over water. There are also 12 drivers to pick from, from businessmen to skinheads and mohicans. Your buggy has 2 gears, high and low. Once the light goes green, just keep the pedal to the metal. You’ll need to place third or higher to continue to the next stage. Be careful not to bump into other buggies or objects next to the road. While you’re buggy can take a pounding, crashing will slow you down. Finish all 5 stages in a level and you’ll be presented with a bonus level.
