Power Instinct 2 is a 2D arcade fighting game from Atlus that expands on its predecessor with five new combatants and high-octane one-on-one battles. Players choose from a roster of skilled fighters drawn into a clan war, duking it out in stages that mix brutal melee strikes with cinematic finishing moves. The 1994 arcade release sticks to core fighting mechanics without the bonus modes found in earlier console versions, focusing purely on competitive sparring for single players or local head-to-head matches. The story follows the Goketsuji clan’s power struggle after Oume’s younger sister Otane ousts her as leader. When Oume’s brother Oshima intervenes to spark revenge, the clan’s rules force a new tournament to crown a successor. The PlayStation port later added content hinting at the series’ next chapter, but the arcade original remains a punchy, story-driven brawler. Released in Japan in October 1994, it’s a fast-paced entry in Atlus’ niche fighting catalog with a tangled family saga and sharp combat timing.

Storyline

Oume Goketsuji, Leader of the Goketsuji clan for the last 60 years, finally was defeated by her younger sister, Otane, the day where she surpassed her older sister finally had arrived. One night, Oshima Goketsuji unexpectedly appeared in front of Oume and offered her help to take revenge of Otane. According to the rules of the clan, if the leader dies or quits, one new tournament should be held immediately to find a successor. That same night Oshima and Oume sent their servants to dispose of Otane, so while Otane slept, she was kidnapped and thrown to the ocean. Next day Kuroko found a letter supposedly written by Otane, where she declined to her right to be the leader of the clan. One week later all the competitors from the previous tournament and other family members were convoked to be informed about Otane's decision and the beginning of a new tournament.
