Primal Rage is a 1994 fighting game where prehistoric beasts clash in a ruined world. Players choose from dinosaurs and giant apes locked in one-on-one brawls, using digitized stop-motion visuals to bring their moves to life. The side-view combat features acrobatic attacks and brutal finishing moves that end matches with over-the-top brutality. A post-apocalyptic Earth, reshaped into a primordial jungle, serves as the backdrop for battles between seven ancient creatures now worshipped as deities by primitive clans. The game’s stop-motion animation gives it a distinctively rough-edged look that stands apart from smoother rivals. Despite its age it ran on over a dozen platforms from SNES to Sega Saturn, proof of its mid-90s popularity. While not as technically sharp as top-tier fighters from the era its over-the-top style and creature designs earned it a cult following among retro brawler fans.
A massive meteor strike has devastated Earth. Human civilization comes to an end in the ensuing cataclysms and humanity regresses into tribes of Stone Age dwellers. A primordial rainforest covers the land and the continental landmass has shifted into the shape of a fire-breathing dinosaur skull. The planet is now primitively referred to as "Urth" by the survivors of the cataclysms. Seven fearsome creatures emerge from their slumber deep within the Urth's crust, and become worshiped as gods by the humans, who form segregated clans beneath the ones they follow. The beasts themselves are divided between those who wish to keep peace on Urth, and those who attempt to plunge the world into further chaos for their own benefit.
