Proto Dere .Nes is a 1989 NES platformer that never saw official release. Built as a prototype for AppSir's later Dere series, it features basic 2D levels where players navigate pixelated environments, avoiding hazards and collecting items. The gameplay feels rough around the edges with visible bugs and incomplete assets, but it captures the simplistic charm of late 80s arcade conversions. Controls are straightforward, focusing on basic movement and interactions, though the unstable code leads to frequent crashes and graphical oddities. This title exists as a historical curiosity more than a polished experience. Its discovery after 33 years sparked excitement in retro gaming circles, with forums and Let's Plays dissecting its unfinished state. While not playable in full, the ROM leak offers a glimpse into early AppSir design philosophy. Community archives note its significance as a direct predecessor to Dere .Exe, drawing comparisons between its skeletal framework and the refined mechanics of later entries. Fans of abandoned projects and development history will find value in its raw, unfiltered state.
“Guys, I think I found something! Apparently, it’s a lost NES port of the old PROTO DERE arcade game which was showcased in 2017 for the AppSir launch party. I couldn’t find information about the game in any of the listings. It’s either an obsure bootleg, or a pre-production cart that never made it to release. Despite the internal damage on the game’s circuit board, I was able to rip the ROM so you guys can have a look at it. It’s filled with glitches, but I’m certain I didn’t corrupt the ROM. That’s how it played when I got it working on my dusty old NES, so maybe that’s why it was never released.”
