About Quake

Quake dropped in June 1996 as the first entry in id Software's legendary series. This shooter launched on PC, Mac, DOS, Amiga, and later ports like Linux and Sega Saturn. You play as Ranger, a soldier who gets pulled through a faulty teleportation device called the Slipgate. The government experiment goes wrong when an enemy code-named Quake hijacks the system to send death squads into our dimension. Your job is to navigate dark, maze-like medieval dungeons and clear them out using a massive arsenal of weapons. Trent Reznor composed the soundtrack for this 3D action title that changed how we view shooters forever.

Gameplay

You move through tight corridors and open arenas while firing at monsters from first-person perspective. The core loop involves hunting down enemies in maze-like levels, managing ammo, and finding key items to unlock new areas. You wield everything from a simple shotgun to the rocket launcher and telefrag with precision. Sessions feel frantic as you juggle combat and puzzle-solving elements within the same map. Multiplayer modes let you fight other humans or team up for co-op campaigns against AI. Controls rely on keyboard and mouse input for quick turns and accurate aiming. You often find yourself backtracking through previously cleared sections to access previously locked pathways while avoiding traps hidden in the stone architecture.

What Players Think

Players rate this title highly with a Metacritic score of 94 out of 100 and an IGDB average of 82.7 based on 384 ratings. The community describes the vibe as hardcore and chaotic, reflecting the intense combat style. Completion rates suggest a challenging experience that keeps players engaged for hours. Review snippets highlight the game's speed and technical achievements for its time. Average playtime varies depending on whether you focus on single-player or multiplayer modes, but the difficulty curve remains steep throughout. Users appreciate the unique atmosphere created by the level design and music.

PlayPile's Take

Quake is a must-play for fans of classic shooters who enjoy fast-paced action and complex maps. It costs very little on modern platforms yet delivers hours of content through its campaign and multiplayer modes. The game includes numerous achievements that test your skill in both solo and group play. Not every moment will be smooth given the steep learning curve, but the reward is a memorable experience. This title remains essential for understanding the evolution of 3D gaming. Pick it up if you want to see where the genre started.

Storyline

The player takes the role of a protagonist known as Ranger who was sent into a portal in order to stop an enemy code-named "Quake". The government had been experimenting with teleportation technology and developed a working prototype called a "Slipgate"; the mysterious Quake compromised the Slipgate by connecting it with its own teleportation system, using it to send death squads to the "Human" dimension in order to test the martial capabilities of Humanity.
