Quell 4D is a first-person shooter built for VR that leans into chaotic action and retro aesthetics. You play as Murderman a grizzled soldier with no legs who navigates the world on a gelatinous creature called Mucus. The mission drops you into a derelict research facility called The Lagoreatory where you’re tasked with shutting down a bioengineered disaster. Combat is fast and forgiving with automatic targeting that lets you blast through hordes of genetic abominations. The controls prioritize simplicity over precision making it accessible for newcomers to VR while still feeling satisfyingly slick. The game’s vector-style graphics give everything a distinct 80s arcade vibe that pops in VR. Your slime mount Mucus handles movement automatically letting you focus on shooting. The story is delightfully over-the-top with a sidekick named Rooster and a presidential directive to “kill anything that moves.” Though it launched in 2016 it still holds up as a brisk VR shooter with a personality-packed premise. The lack of complex mechanics makes it easy to jump into for short bursts of retro-fueled carnage.
You are Murderman, a war veteran who lost his legs and now rides around on a slime beast named Mucus. With the company of your side kick, Rooster, you have been sent on a top secret mission to The Lagoreatory to investigate an outbreak of mutated gene experiments. Mr. President has given you full authority in this matter. You are to liberate the Lagoreatory, and kill anything that moves.
