R-Type is a 1987 arcade shooter where you pilot the R-9a Arrowhead through perilous space missions to dismantle the Bydo Empire. The game balances brute firepower with tactical precision, chargeable beams, a detachable shield pod, and laser types tailored for air-to-air or ground assaults force you to adapt on the fly. Levels are famously punishing, often requiring pixel-perfect paths through obstacles and enemies. Trial and error is the name of the game, as death resets progress and forces you to relearn the layout. It plays like a gauntlet of carefully calculated traps disguised as action. The difficulty is legendary, landing it at #7 on IGN’s Top 10 hardest games to beat. Classic shooter fans often cite its relentless challenge as a badge of honor, though newcomers may find it merciless. Originally released on arcades and later ported to Amiga, Atari, and Commodore systems, its influence lingers despite its age. The weapon system and level design set it apart from peers, making each survival feel earned.
This is the story of the first encounter with the Bydo, taking place in the year 2163. The player controls the R-9A Arrowhead to free humanity from the Bydo threat. Other versions of the story state that First Contact started after the World Government had sent a probe to Galaxy X1X. Having found the Bydo building their forces, the government prepared the R-9A in advance.
