About

Radar Scope is a fixed-angle shooter where players control a starship defending a space station from waves of Gamma Raiders. The game uses a forced perspective view to create depth, blending mechanics from Space Invaders with dynamic enemy formations that shift as they advance. Gameplay focuses on precise targeting and quick reflexes, as the Raiders grow closer and faster over time. The single-player and co-op modes emphasize teamwork or solo survival in short, tense bursts. Despite its polished design, Radar Scope flopped commercially in 1980, leaving thousands of unsold machines. This crisis led Nintendo of America to request a new title to repurpose the hardware, directly inspiring Donkey Kong’s creation. Artist Shigeru Miyamoto and composer Hirokazu Tanaka were among those involved in its development. Retrospective praise highlights its role in shaping Nintendo’s future, with one writer calling it "a pivotal misstep that birthed a legacy."
