Radix: Beyond the Void is a 1995 DOS shooter where you pilot a starfighter through alien-infested voids. Controls mimic zero-gravity movement with roll, yaw, and thrust mechanics, though vertical motion remains restricted. Levels unfold in 2.5D with sloped terrain but no overlapping layers. Combat focuses on dodging and targeting weak points in enemy ships, with a mix of ranged weapons and environmental hazards. The campaign follows humanity’s failed colony mission and a desperate rescue through a mysterious alien rift. The game’s niche appeal lies in its early experimentation with non-human perspective in shooters. While lacking the 3D freedom of later titles, its flat but dynamic levels and ship-based combat stand out as a forgotten precursor to space sim trends. Limited to single-player, it preserves a snapshot of mid-90s design when developers pushed Doom’s engine logic into new contexts.
In the 22nd century, humanity has achieved world peace. The United Earth Space Alliance (UESA) was able to fully concentrate on space exploration. In the year 2147, the first colony ship was launched towards the asteroid Theta-2. However, the second vessel, carrying the colonists, encountered a terrifying disturbance in space. Alien ships emerged from what later became known as "The Void", and attacked the colony ship; the subsequent fate of ten thousand people on board was unknown. Humans constructed the inter-dimensional starfighter Radix, and sent it through The Void, in a desperate attempt to face the alien threat.
