About Rage 2

id Software returned with Rage 2 in May 2019 after a long silence. Bethesda published this shooter that also leans into racing and RPG elements. You play as Walker, a survivor in a wasteland where an asteroid wiped out most of humanity. The Authority runs everything with brutal force, and gangs roam the open roads. Your goal is to reclaim your home and topple their rule. The game launched on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, PC, and Stadia. It offers a chaotic mix of running gun combat and high-speed vehicle battles across a dusty, post-apocalyptic landscape that feels less like a careful world design and more like a playground for destruction.

Gameplay

You move on foot or jump into various vehicles to tear through enemy camps. The core loop involves clearing out locations to find upgrades and weapons. You can swap between different firearms, use superpowers to dash or shoot projectiles, and drive cars that fire missiles at targets. Combat feels frantic as you strafe around cover while dealing with multiple gang members. Vehicle sections let you engage in heavy combat where your car becomes a weapon itself. The open world does not force a linear path, but side activities often repeat the same pattern of ambushes and resource gathering. Controls are tight for shooting, though the vehicle handling can feel slippery during high-speed chases.

What Players Think

The PlayPile data shows mixed reception across platforms. IGDB rates the title at 69.3 out of 100 based on 210 ratings. Average playtime sits around 24 hours for a main story run, with completionists pushing past 45 hours. Community moods swing between excitement during combat and frustration with repetitive side quests. Review snippets frequently mention the fun shooting mechanics but criticize the lack of depth in the world interactions. Achievement hunters report a moderate unlock rate, suggesting many players skip optional challenges. The price has dropped significantly, with Green Man Gaming listing it at just 7.99 dollars, which seems to have boosted recent interest despite the lower critical scores.

PlayPile's Take

Rage 2 is worth picking up if you want fast shooting and driving without caring about story depth. The combat shines when you are moving fast, but the open world feels empty after a few hours. It costs around eight dollars currently, making it a cheap impulse buy for fans of id Software's earlier work. You will unlock achievements by clearing out enemy strongholds and finding hidden caches. Do not expect a deep RPG experience or a compelling narrative arc. The game ends abruptly once you finish the main missions. Play this for the gunplay alone and ignore the rest if you can.

Storyline

An asteroid has annihilated 80% of the earth’s population, and humanity’s numbers are dwindling. Ruthless and bloodthirsty gangs roam the open roads and the tyrannical Authority seek to rule with an iron fist. As Walker, the last Ranger of the wasteland and a threat to their power, you have been robbed of your home and left for dead. Now you’ll have to rage for justice and freedom. With ludicrous vehicle combat, super-powered first-person mayhem, and an open world full of emergent madness, you will tear across an unforgiving wasteland battling sadistic gangs to find the tools and tech needed to crush the oppressive rule of The Authority once and for all.
