Rambo III is a light gun shooter that tasks you with guiding the titular soldier through seven stages of combat in Afghanistan. Using the Light Phaser, you’ll target enemies in environments ranging from rural villages to mountain caves, all while dodging bullets and avoiding traps. The game’s difficulty spikes quickly, demanding steady hands and split-second timing. Each level brings tighter corridors and more enemies, pushing your aim to its limit as you fight to rescue a captured commander and escape the war-torn region. What sets it apart is its place as one of the earliest light gun games on home consoles, turning the Sega Master System into a pseudo-arcade cabinet. While the visuals and mechanics feel rudimentary by modern standards, its aggressive pacing and relentless action made it a standout title for its era. Players who owned the hardware often remember it for its punishing challenge and the novelty of pointing a gun at the screen. Nostalgia aside, it’s a brisk, no-frills test of reflexes that leans into the Rambo mythos without overcomplicating things.
It’s a mission he can’t refuse: John Rambo, soldier, fighter, hero, has been asked to rescue his friend and former commander, Colonel Trautman. The Colonel had been making a delivery of much-needed weapons to Mujahedin freedom-fighters in Afghanistan when he was captured by Russian soldiers. Now held in a wretched prison camp in that war-torn nation, the Colonel has been abandoned by his country, which is afraid that a rescue mission would be too politically sensitive to undertake. Only one man is left to save the Colonel, Rambo! Using grenades and a stolen Kalashinikov assault rifle, fight your way through seven levels of combat action. From village to mountain, from prison camp to cave, Rambo battles onward to rescue his friend, help the freedom-loving rebels, and make out of the country alive.
