Red Colony 2 casts you as Nicole, a former sex worker navigating the collapse of Martian society. After a covert mission to the Red Colony, she returns to find the supposedly safe Blue District also infected by the Z-Virus. Her daughter is missing, her neighborhood is overrun, and escape to the elite’s sanctuary Sky City requires sneaking past zombies, solving environmental puzzles, and firing weapons in tight encounters. The game blends quick-time actions with point-and-click exploration, all framed by a nonlinear narrative where Nicole’s personal history collides with the colony’s figuring out systems. The game’s standout is its unapologetic tone, pairing grim survival scenarios with campy, over-the-top character interactions. Japanese voice acting adds a distinct anime flair to its dystopian setting, while the developer’s solo effort shows in both its ambitious scope and rough edges. With a July 2021 release on PC and Switch, it’s a brisk 12-15 hour jaunt through Mars’ underbelly that players rated 7.8/10 on Metacritic for its bold storytelling and genre-hopping execution.
The story takes place directly after the first game. Nicole returns to the Blue Colony to find that it has been overrun by zombies. She needs to find her daughter and try to escape to the last refuge on Mars: Sky City. However, whilst searching for her daughter in the chaos, long forgotten secrets of Nicole's past return to haunt her.
