Capcom Planning Room 2 dropped Resident Evil on March 22, 1996 for PlayStation and PC. This title defined survival horror by pitting S.T.A.R.S. agents against zombies in a creepy mansion. Players control Chris Redfield or Jill Valentine as they explore the Umbrella Corporation's secret lab hidden within the estate. The game features polygonal 3D models moving across static, pre-rendered backgrounds. You navigate fixed camera angles to solve puzzles and find key items while managing limited ammo. Virgin Interactive Entertainment published this single-player adventure that popularized a whole genre. It remains a landmark release for its tense atmosphere and resource management challenges.
You move through the mansion using tank controls or direct movement depending on your platform. The camera snaps to specific angles, forcing you to look around corners before enemies appear. You must manage inventory space carefully since each item takes up slots. Combat involves precise aiming with a crosshair and firing at weak points like heads to stop zombies from getting too close. Most fights are avoidable if you solve the environmental puzzles correctly. You search desks, safes, and drawers for ammo, herbs, and keys. The game tracks your status with a save room system using typewriters and ink ribbons. Every door opening requires careful positioning since enemies often ambush you right after you enter a new area.
Critics and players rate this title 78.4 out of 100 on IGDB based on 430 ratings. The PlayPile community describes the vibe as atmospheric, with five votes for that trait. Four users call it story-driven while three highlight its creepy nature. One person noted an emotional component to the experience. Average playtime sits around 15 hours for a standard run. Users mention completing all achievements takes about 20 hours total. The cheapest current price is $14.99 on Green Man Gaming. No other site tracks these specific mood tags or community completion metrics. People still discuss the fixed camera angles as a defining, if polarizing, mechanic from this era of gaming history.
This game works best for players who enjoy methodical exploration over fast reflexes. The price of $14.99 makes it an easy buy for horror fans. You earn achievements by finding all items and completing specific challenges. Some modern gamers might find the fixed camera angles frustrating compared to today's freedom. The limited ammo forces you to think before every engagement. It is a must-play for anyone interested in game history or classic survival horror. Skip this if you prefer open worlds with constant combat action.
On July 24, 1998, when a series of bizarre murders occur on the outskirts of the Midwestern town of Raccoon City, the Raccoon City Police Department's S.T.A.R.S. team are assigned to investigate. After contact with Bravo Team is lost, Alpha Team is sent to investigate their disappearance. Alpha Team locates Bravo Team's crashed helicopter and land at the site, where they are suddenly attacked by a pack of monstrous dogs, killing one of the team's members. After Alpha Team's helicopter pilot, Brad Vickers, panics and takes off alone, the remaining members of the team (Chris Redfield, Jill Valentine, Albert Wesker and Barry Burton) are forced to seek refuge in a nearby abandoned mansion. It soon becomes very clear that it isn't just any mansion, but a hellish place where the undead walk the corridors and other horrors are lurking in the darkness, waiting to eat some heads.
