About Resident Evil 4

Resident Evil 4 arrived on January 11, 2005, as the sixth entry in Capcom's long-running horror franchise. This title marked a massive shift for the series by swapping fixed camera angles for an over-the-shoulder third-person view. You play as Leon S. Kennedy, a government agent sent to rural Spain to rescue the President's daughter from a cult. Released originally for the Nintendo GameCube, it is now available on various platforms through digital stores. The game focuses on fast-paced action rather than slow puzzle-solving, creating a tense experience where you must manage resources while fighting off hordes of infected villagers.

Gameplay

Sessions revolve around moving through large open areas and engaging in real-time combat using an over-the-shoulder camera. You aim down sights to shoot enemies or perform melee takedowns when ammo runs low. The control scheme feels responsive, letting you dodge quickly to avoid being swarmed. Enemies behave like actual threats by climbing ladders, opening doors, and coordinating attacks to trap you in tight corners. You constantly scavenge for health items, crafting materials, and ammunition while solving simple puzzles to progress through the story. Each encounter requires careful positioning and resource management to survive against enemies that adapt to your tactics.

What Players Think

Critics and players have praised this title heavily, with Metacritic holding a score of 83 out of 100. The IGDB community rates it even higher at 84.5 based on 1560 user reviews. Players describe the atmosphere as creepy and chaotic, with several users tagging it as hardcore due to the difficulty spike. Average playtime varies widely depending on how thorough you are with side content, but most finish the main campaign in around 20 hours. The community mood leans heavily toward tension, with no one calling it a casual stroll through a park. Cheapest prices currently hover around $7.49 on Green Man Gaming, making it an accessible entry point for new players.

PlayPile's Take

This game is worth playing if you want to see how modern action shooters evolved from survival horror roots. The price of roughly $7.49 offers dozens of hours of content without any multiplayer requirements. You will earn achievements by mastering different difficulty settings and finding hidden treasures throughout the Spanish countryside. It works best for players who enjoy managing limited inventory space while facing overwhelming odds. The AI behavior creates genuine moments of panic that older titles never managed to replicate. Do not expect a relaxed walk; this is a tense battle for survival.

Storyline

The game's main protagonist is Leon S. Kennedy, one of the few survivors of the Raccoon City incident, who was recruited and trained by the US Government to become a special agent after they learned of his actions in Raccoon City. Now an agent for a special security agency, Leon is sent to Spain on a mission to rescue Ashley Graham, the President's daughter, who has been kidnapped by a mysterious cult organization.
