About Resident Evil

Capcom dropped this remake on the GameCube in March 2002 to refresh the 1996 classic. It swaps fixed camera angles for modern visuals while keeping the story of S.T.A.R.S. Alpha team investigating a mansion full of monsters. You explore the Arklay Mountains after a helicopter crash and find your squad picked off by zombies and giant dogs. The game adds new rooms, secrets, and multiple endings that were absent in the original release. This is a single-player adventure where survival depends on managing limited resources and solving puzzles under pressure.

Gameplay

You move through corridors and solve environmental puzzles while hunting for ammo and healing items. The controls feel tight as you aim your handgun or shotgun at approaching enemies. Combat requires planning because bullets are scarce and health items are not always easy to find. You must manage inventory space carefully since the menu system restricts how much gear you can carry. Exploring the mansion reveals hidden rooms and new paths that change the flow of the story. Occasional quick-time events add tension during scripted moments where a single wrong move means instant death.

What Players Think

Players rate this remake highly with an IGDB score of 83.9 out of 100 based on 248 ratings. The community vibes lean dark and creepy as three voters tagged the mood dark and one called it creepy. Most players struggle to finish everything since the average achievement unlock rate sits at just 18.9 percent across 44 total achievements. Finding the rarest trophy, Ghost of a Chance, is tough with only 2.90 percent of players unlocking it. The game currently costs $4.99 on Steam, which matches its historical low price point for those looking to pick it up cheap.

PlayPile's Take

This title works best for fans who want a classic horror experience without modern quality-of-life changes. You should buy it if you like managing scarce resources and solving puzzles under pressure. The $4.99 price tag makes it an easy add to your library regardless of completion status. Be warned that chasing every achievement will take significant time since the hardest ones require specific, non-obvious actions. Most people stop playing after seeing one ending, but those who hunt for secrets will find plenty to do.

Storyline

Special forces S.T.A.R.S. Bravo team's helicopter malfunctioned and crashed during their mission, disappearing into the Arklay Mountains. Now, S.T.A.R.S. Alpha team is sent on a mission to investigate a series of murders around Raccoon Forest. Spotting the Bravo team's helicopter, or what's left of it, they land nearby and investigate the surrounding area. Unaware of what they might expect, one member is attacked and devoured by zombified Dobermans. The rest of the team, with a little bit of luck, find shelter in a nearby mansion, not knowing it was probably better to stay out.
