"Instead of the b-movie cheesiness we’ve come to know and love from previous games (sorry fans — no boulder-punching this time around), Resident Evil VII reaches levels of dread and fear we haven’t seen since the days of the original, and that (mostly) works to the game’s advantage when it comes to reinvigorating the franchise. Though it appears like a complete reinvention from the outside looking in, Resident Evil VII is very much made from the same DNA that made the original games the revered horror classics that they are today. Like the game’s intro that has players sitting down for supper with the Bakers, Resident Evil VII has welcomed players back not just to the series’ horror roots, but to a grim, disgusting feast that you just can’t turn away from."

Resident Evil 7: Biohazard marks a massive shift for the series when Capcom released it in January 2017. Developer Capcom Division 1 moved the franchise from third-person action into a grounded first-person perspective. You play as Ethan Winters, a civilian trying to find his missing wife Mia near a rotting plantation in Louisiana. The game launched on PlayStation 4, PC, and Xbox One before expanding to newer consoles like Switch 2 and PS5. It also supports VR on compatible headsets. This title reinvented the classic survival horror formula by focusing on atmosphere and tension rather than run-and-gun combat.
You explore a dilapidated house filled with puzzles and limited supplies. Combat feels clunky on purpose because ammo is scarce. You spend most of your time hunting for clues, solving environmental riddles, or running from enemies like the Baker family. The game balances slow-burn exploration with sudden bursts of violence when you are cornered. Controls feel tight in first-person view, making every interaction with a door or inventory item feel deliberate. You can play on standard screens or strap into PlayStation VR for a more visceral experience. Sessions often involve backtracking through dark corridors while managing your dwindling resources.
Players and critics generally agree this is a strong entry. Metacritic holds the score at 85 out of 100 while OpenCritic shows 90.36% of reviewers recommend it. The average player spends around 10 hours to finish the main story. Achievement data reveals that only 26.5% of users have unlocked all 58 trophies available. The rarest trophy, "Don't Keep the Man Waiting," has an unlock rate of just 2%. Community moods on PlayPile lean heavily toward Intense and Creepy vibes. Critics from Polygon and God is a Geek praised the return to form, calling it the best horror game in recent memory despite some concerns about long-term legacy compared to older classics.
This title is worth your time if you want genuine scares without constant action. The current price on Steam sits at $7.99 during sales, making it a cheap entry point for the whole catalog. You should expect a challenging experience where 2% of players can even earn the hardest achievement. It suits fans of puzzle-solving and resource management who prefer tension over firepower. The VR mode adds an extra layer of discomfort that standard play does not match. If you can handle slow pacing and fear, this game delivers on its promise of dread.
Resident Evil 7: Biohazard is set in mid-2017 somewhere in the southern United States after the dramatic events of Resident Evil 6. The game features a new protagonist named Ethan Winters, a civilian searching for his missing wife Mia which leads him to a derelict plantation mansion occupied by an infected family.
