"Capcom's Production Studio 4 built Spencer Mansion to remain as haunting as the monsters that inhabit it. This 1996 PS1 game has minor skeletons in its closet, including a stingy save system, sluggish load times, and bewildering puzzles as terrifying as the creepy Chimeras. The GameCube renovation stole some of its thunder, but riding this ghoul train's balance of power between vulnerability, survival, and Colt Python carnage is gruesomely gratifying. The lumbering Lurch-like controls become reanimated as you adjust to speed run through its halls, and the tense atmosphere is more memorable than any dusty antiques on its shelf. There's a stack of content hidden in the basement of the 1997 Director's Cut, with extra difficulty levels and secrets adding replay value beneath the creaky pre-rendered floorboards. Panic-building level structure and a spine-chilling audio arrangement establish Resident Evil as a horror-ific humdinger of a PS1 game for Hallowe'en."

Resident Evil: Director's Cut is a revised version of the 1996 survival horror game released ahead of Resident Evil 2. It follows the same core loop of exploration, puzzle-solving, and tense combat as the original, but includes tweaks like adjusted enemy placements and a new "arranged mode" with alternate routes. Players control members of the S.T.A.R.S. team navigating a cursed mansion, managing limited ammo and health while avoiding grotesque creatures. The game retains the methodical pacing and inventory management that defined early Resident Evil titles but adds minor flourishes to refresh the formula. The most notable change is the uncut opening cinematic, which features more graphic violence including a bloodied corpse and visceral zombie dog attacks. These additions didn't significantly alter the gameplay but fueled discussion among fans. While not drastically different from the original, the Director's Cut serves as a curious footnote in the series' history. Its PS3 and PSP ports later gave newer audiences a taste of the franchise's roots, though it remains a niche entry compared to its successors.
On July 24, 1998, when a series of bizarre murders occur on the outskirts of the Midwestern town of Raccoon City, the Raccoon City Police Department's S.T.A.R.S. team are assigned to investigate. After contact with Bravo Team is lost, Alpha Team is sent to investigate their disappearance. Alpha Team locates Bravo Team's crashed helicopter and land at the site, where they are suddenly attacked by a pack of monstrous dogs, killing one of the team's members. After Alpha Team's helicopter pilot, Brad Vickers, panics and takes off alone, the remaining members of the team (Chris Redfield, Jill Valentine, Albert Wesker and Barry Burton) are forced to seek refuge in a nearby abandoned mansion. It soon becomes very clear that it isn't just any mansion, but a hellish place where the undead walk the corridors and other horrors are lurking in the darkness, waiting to eat some heads.
