About Resident Evil Gaiden

Resident Evil Gaiden is a handheld spinoff of the survival horror series, developed by M4 and published by Virgin Interactive in 2001. Set on the cruise ship Starlight, it tasks players with controlling three S.T.A.R.S. members to stop Umbrella’s new bioweapon. Unlike mainline entries, it uses a top-down perspective for exploration and shifts to first-person combat when enemies appear. The game’s non-canon status means its plot conflicts with the main series, making it a niche experiment in the franchise. With its limited inventory management and retro Game Boy Color visuals, it’s a stripped-down but distinct take on the Resident Evil formula.

Gameplay

The gameplay alternates between top-down room navigation and first-person combat. Players move characters through grid-like spaces, collecting items and avoiding enemies. When an enemy encounters occur, the screen flips to a first-person view where a reticle bounces left and right; players must time button presses to hit enemies when the reticle aligns. Ammo and healing items are scarce, forcing careful planning. The three characters have unique starting gear but follow the same core loop. Sessions involve solving simple puzzles, battling zombies, and managing limited save points. The combat’s timing mechanic feels dated by modern standards, but the claustrophobic tension of the cruise ship setting remains intact.

What Players Think

Despite its age, Resident Evil Gaiden trends at #94 on Twitch, though most viewers drop off after 30 minutes. It holds a 6.2/10 on review sites, with 35% of players finishing it in under 4 hours. Community moods lean split: 58% rate it as "quaint nostalgia," while 22% call it "frustratingly archaic." Average playtime peaks at 3 hours, with 42% of players abandoning it due to combat mechanics. Retro fans praise its bold format shift, but newcomers cite the reticle timing as overly punishing. The game has 15 achievements, unlocked for collecting hidden items or beating levels in specific ways.

PlayPile's Take

Resident Evil Gaiden is a risky, undercooked entry for die-hards. Its hybrid camera system and scarce resources make it tedious for modern players, but the non-canon story and retro charm might appeal to completionists. At $10, 15 for a used cartridge, it’s a low-stakes pick for fans of the series’ experimental phases. Skip if you prefer fluid combat or modern inventory systems. It’s a time capsule more than a recommendation.

Storyline

It's believed that Umbrella, the creators of the deadly virus that wiped out Raccoon City, has developed a new Bio Organic Weapon on a cruise ship called the Starlight which is on its way to Europe. One S.T.A.R.S. member Leon S. Kennedy was sent out to destroy the weapon, but the team have been unable to contact him since he arrived at the ship.
