Resident Evil: Operation Raccoon City drops you into September 1998 when Umbrella tries to clean up their T-virus mess by killing everyone left alive. Slant Six Games built this spin-off as a third-person shooter rather than the survival horror fans expect. You lead a squad of elite soldiers through the streets of a city in total lockdown. The game launched on March 20, 2012 across PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, and PC. It supports single player campaigns, co-op missions, and multiplayer matches where you pick four characters from a roster of twelve. Each soldier brings distinct weapons and abilities to the table during the chaotic firefight.
You control one character while AI teammates handle the rest in both story mode and online sessions. The camera stays behind your shoulder as you sprint down ruined streets or clear out office buildings filled with infected creatures. Every squad member has a specific role like heavy weapons or hacking that changes how you approach objectives. Matches often involve holding positions against waves of zombies or hunting down enemies hiding in dark corners. Controls feel snappy but the cover system sometimes feels restrictive when enemies swarm from all sides. You need to manage ammo carefully since reloading leaves you vulnerable to sudden attacks from the horde.
PlayPile members and IGDB critics generally agree this title misses the mark with a 48.1 out of 100 score based on 93 ratings. Average playtime sits around eight hours for the main campaign before most players move on. Community mood leans toward "meh" since the game feels like a generic shooter lacking the tension of classic Resident Evil entries. Review snippets frequently mention repetitive objectives and unbalanced character abilities as major gripes. Only about 15 percent of users have completed all achievements, suggesting high difficulty in some multiplayer modes or frustrating checkpoint systems. The community prefers the survival horror roots over this action-heavy approach despite the impressive visual fidelity for its era.
This game works only if you want a quick shooter without worrying about resource management or puzzle solving. You will pay full price at launch but it sits on sale often now due to low replay value. Achievements are scattered and some feel unfair to unlock in multiplayer environments. Skip this unless you specifically enjoy squad-based shooting mechanics with minimal narrative weight. The lack of horror elements makes it forgettable compared to other entries in the franchise. It remains a decent diversion for two or three weeks but offers little long term value for serious gamers.
It‘s September 1998 and Raccoon City is being consumed by Umbrella’s deadly T-virus outbreak. With a cover up required, Umbrella orders an elite squad into Raccoon City to destroy all evidence of the outbreak and eliminate any survivors. Meanwhile, the US Government has quarantined the city and dispatched its own team of elite Spec-Ops soldiers to track down the source of the mysterious outbreak.
