Return of Double Dragon is a side-scrolling brawler that tightens and tweaks the formula from its predecessor. Players control Billy or Jimmy Lee as they punch, kick, and grab weapons through six levels of neon-lit streets and underground clubs. The game adds new moves like the repeated hurricane kick and boomerang retrieval, while enemy behavior shifts, opponents can duck finishing moves, forcing players to adapt. Weapon damage is dialed back, and music tracks are shuffled, giving the experience a fresh rhythm. Co-op play remains a core feature, with precise timing needed to chain attacks and survive waves of thugs. The Option Mode stands out as a surprisingly modern touch for a 90s game, letting players tweak difficulty or explore sound effects and music tracks. The final mission tacks on two extra stages, lengthening the already dense campaign. Though often overshadowed by its SNES predecessor, this 1994 Japan-exclusive version has a cult following for its sharper mechanics and challenge. With pixel art that still pops and a soundtrack ripe for headbanging, it’s a niche hit for brawler purists.
