About Returnal

Housemarque returned with Returnal in April 2021 after a long silence. This third-person shooter launched on PlayStation 5 first and later hit PC. You play as Selene Vassos, an astronaut crash-landing on Atropos. The planet shifts constantly while you hunt for a signal called the White Shadow. Death traps you in a time loop where every run ends exactly the same way. You start over with nothing but memories of what happened before. The game demands precision and patience as you explore biomes that change layout between runs. It feels like a modern take on classic arcade shooters wrapped in a sci-fi horror story about survival.

Gameplay

You control Selene with tight, responsive third-person shooting mechanics. Every session starts at the crash site where you grab a basic weapon and hunt for loot. You move through rooms filled with alien creatures that react to your position. Combat requires constant movement since cover is scarce and bullets fly fast. Finding new guns or upgrades changes how you handle fights significantly. When you die, the entire world resets while you keep some knowledge of past attempts. The game uses permadeath mechanics where losing progress feels harsh but fair. You spend minutes grinding for resources to unlock better gear before tackling deeper zones. Each run lasts between thirty and forty-five minutes depending on your skill level.

What Players Think

Players rate this title heavily with a Metacritic score of 86 and an IGDB rating of 86.5 from 190 user reviews. The community mood leans toward frustration mixed with admiration for the difficulty spike. Average playtime sits around 28 hours for those who finish the main story. Completion rates show only about 40 percent of players reach the final boss on their first try. Many users describe the experience as punishing but rewarding when they finally beat an obstacle. Review snippets frequently mention the sound design and haptic feedback as standout features that heighten tension. Some critics note the learning curve is steep compared to other shooters in the genre. The community agrees that mastering the gunplay feels essential for long-term enjoyment.

PlayPile's Take

Returnal suits players who enjoy high difficulty and do not mind repeated failures. The price point reflects a premium single-player experience with no microtransactions. You will unlock 38 achievements if you push yourself to master every mechanic. Housemarque built a system where death drives progression rather than stopping it. This title is not for casual gamers looking for a relaxed afternoon session. It demands focus and repetition to overcome the shifting planet hazards. The combat feels precise enough that skill matters more than random chance. Buy this if you want a challenging shooter that respects your time even when you fail.

Storyline

Break the cycle of chaos on an always-changing alien planet where even death is no escape. After crash-landing on this shape-shifting world, Selene must search through the barren landscape of an ancient civilization for her escape. Isolated and alone, she finds herself fighting tooth and nail for survival. Again and again, she’s defeated – forced to restart her journey every time she dies.
