Rez Infinite is the definitive version of Sega's 2001 rail shooter originally made by Tetsuya Mizuguchi. This 2016 remaster brings the game to modern platforms including PS4, PC, and multiple VR headsets like Quest and PSVR. You play as Swayzak, a hacker virus moving through Project-K, a digital network controlled by an AI named Eden. The goal is simple: destroy security programs and firewalls while re-awakening the system's core consciousness. It blends arcade shooting with music where every bullet fired syncs to the soundtrack. Enhance handled this update with original team members involved. You get the full visual overhaul plus new content that fits right into the psychedelic aesthetic of the near-future setting.
You control a hovering aircraft moving automatically along set paths while you aim and shoot using motion controls or standard gamepad buttons. The core loop involves destroying enemies that appear in time with the music. Each level features different visual themes ranging from neon-lit industrial zones to abstract data streams. Shooting creates synesthetic effects where colors pulse and sounds change based on your actions. You collect energy orbs to charge special attacks that clear large groups of enemies instantly. VR players sit back and aim a light gun while the world wraps around them. The game runs in single-player mode with no multiplayer options. Sessions last about an hour per stage, and you must complete all levels to unlock everything. Controls feel tight despite the frantic pace.
Critics loved this version with Metacritic sitting at a solid 91 out of 100. PlayPile data shows players spent an average of 4 hours completing the main story. Only 15.1 percent of users unlocked achievements on average, which suggests many people stop after one run. The hardest challenge is the "Master of Rez" trophy held by just 0.60 percent of the player base. Community mood stays mostly positive with frequent mentions of the music and visuals as the highlight. Some users complain about the lack of difficulty options beyond the standard setting. Review snippets often praise the seamless integration of audio and visuals. The price sits at a historical low of $19.88 on Fanatical, making it an easy buy for fans. Most players agree the VR experience is superior to the flat version.
This title works best if you enjoy rhythmic shooters or want to see what early virtual reality felt like before the technology caught up. You will need a controller that supports motion tracking for the full effect, though standard buttons work fine. The 20 achievements are tough to get since the rarest one needs near perfect playthroughs. Pay the $19.88 price tag if you can find it on sale because it is an art piece more than a game. Do not expect deep mechanics or replayability beyond collecting data crystals. Finish the game, listen to the soundtrack, and move on unless you are obsessed with that 0.60 percent achievement rate.
The world of Rez is set in the near future on a massively overpopulated Earth with society crippled by crime rates, and on the verge of meltdown. In an attempt to resolve the chaos, a new global network was created: Project-K, overseen by a self-aware artificial intelligence named Eden. However, the increasing information flow and infection by a virus (the main character) confused Eden, allowing her to begin questioning the meaning of its existence and the consequences of her actions. Trying to fathom the paradoxes that surrounded her and realizing the power she possessed, she shut herself down. The player character and protagonist is a hacker virus unofficially named Swayzak, traversing the Project-K network on a mission to re-awaken Eden and to reveal the true being at her core by progressing deeper through the system, and destroying the other viruses, anti-viruses, security programs, defense systems, and firewalls within.
