Rip Cord is a 1979 arcade game where you skydive while dodging swarms of helicopters. You press a button to leap from a plane, then quickly hit another to deploy your parachute before slamming into the ground. Once your chute opens you use a dial to steer left or right as you fall. The trick is timing your jump and parachute release just right to avoid getting shot up by the enemy choppers that block your path. The screen scrolls upward as you descend making the targets shrink with every move. What makes it stick out is the strict timing and control balance. Early arcade games often focused on simple reflexes but Rip Cord adds a layer of strategy with its two-button mechanics. Players need to calculate when to pull the parachute to gain control while also managing their horizontal drift. Despite being a black and white title from the late 70s it holds up as a surprisingly precise action game. The relentless helicopter formations keep tension high even as the monochrome visuals focus attention on the gameplay itself.
