"Even though the aesthetic, soundtrack, and intelligent dialogue create a package that looks outstanding, Rip Them Off fails to come together in its puzzle gameplay. While utilizing trial-and-error can have its merits, Rip Them Off's method of having the player learn a mathematic language that it then changes constantly just doesn't make for a fun gameplay loop. Lacking hard solutions and ramping up difficulty before you've been properly taught makes Rip Them Off a puzzle title that is hard to recommend."

About

Rip Off is a fast-paced vector-based arcade shooter where you guard energy canisters from swarms of computer-controlled enemies. Play solo or team up with another player to pilot tank-like vehicles against invading pirate tanks. Your goal is to stop these foes from dragging canisters off the screen, with each wave bringing more enemies and faster action. Defeat waves by shooting or ramming targets as the growing chaos pushes your reflexes to the limit. This 1980 release holds two key claims to fame: it was the first arcade shoot 'em up with co-op multiplayer and introduced the concept of "flocking" AI behavior in enemies. The simple yet frantic design has aged surprisingly well, with its escalating difficulty and tight controls keeping players engaged. Originally available on arcades and the Vectrex, it remains a cult classic among retro gaming fans for its clever mechanics and chaotic energy.
