Rise of the Triad updates a 90s first-person shooter formula with slick modern visuals while keeping its chaotic spirit intact. Players tear through levels with a focus on speed, using explosive firepower and quick reflexes over careful planning. Environments brim with hazards like deadly traps and spring-loaded launch pads that send characters bouncing across maps. Weapons deliver over-the-top damage with liberal splashes of gore and wildly powerful effects. The single player campaign follows a small team battling a shadowy group on a remote island while multiplayer lets matches erupt into frenetic gunfights. The game’s relentless pace and commitment to over-the-top action stand out, with community reviews praising its return to fast, no-nonsense shooting. Blood splatters are frequent and graphic, and the weapon roster includes bizarre yet effective tools that lean into the series’ love for absurd firepower. Launched in 2013 for PC, it retains the original’s signature blend of speed and brutality without slowing down for modern conventions.
The game is set on San Nicholas Island near California, USA, where the United Nations has found proof that a rogue organization known as The Triad (a thinly veiled name for what look like Nazis) has set up a base of operations there. They sent in a paramilitary task force called HUNT (High risk United Nations Task force) to investigate. It consists of five people (the same of the original game: Taradino, Lorelei, Ian, Thi and Doug) and they arrive in with a small boat. When they are spotted, the boat is blown up and they need to find a way to get off the island.
