River Raid: Mission of No Return was a planned shooter for the Super Nintendo that never saw the light of day. Players controlled a jet flying down a winding river to destroy enemy boats and refuel at oil tankers. The goal remained simple compared to modern titles. You had to manage your fuel while shooting through waves of opponents. Activision developed this title alongside sequels for other classic franchises like Kaboom and Pitfall during the mid nineties. It appeared in trade show demos and preview magazines before being quietly cancelled. Only Pitfall eventually reached the market from that specific lineup. This unreleased project stands out as a piece of gaming history rather than a finished product. Collectors often discuss how close it came to becoming a real sequel on the SNES. The game was showcased at the 1993 Summer CES and featured in the EGM 1994 Video Game Preview Guide. Its existence proves that Activision had big plans for their 8-bit IP before focusing elsewhere. Fans of the original Atari 2600 classic still reference this prototype when talking about what could have been. It remains a curious footnote in the company's history instead of a playable title on your shelf.
