Robopon 2 Ring Version is a quirky RPG that channels the monster-collecting spirit of early handheld games. As Cody, you train robotic creatures called Robopons to battle, collect XStones, and chase a tournament against the resurrected Dr. Zero. The sequel adds time-travel mechanics to retrieve hidden items while fighting cyborgs and a low-powered rival named Nick D. Combat follows standard turn-based RPG rules but leans into charm over complexity. The Game Boy Advance version updates the Game Boy Color original with sharper visuals and expanded controls. The game stands out for its oddball extras. Use the GB Kiss infrared port to trade Robopons wirelessly or interact with real-world remotes to evolve creatures and unlock secret chests, features that felt cutting-edge in 2001. While it never reached mainstream popularity, its blend of hardware hacks and lighthearted story earned a cult following. Nostalgic players still praise the whimsical design and the oddly satisfying XStone hunts.
Robopon 2 takes place after Robopon 2. Cody washes up on the shore of Baba Village. After recruiting a new Robopon, he sets out to go to the tournament of Legend1 rank holders but is delayed. Dr. Zero has survived the events of the last game thanks to the time-travel of his brother Dr. Zeke and now has the rank Legend0. To fight him, Cody needs to defeat the rank holders of Majiko. While many of them have hidden the XStones needed to battle them, Cody is able to secure them via time-travel. During this, Cody will fight against three Robopon user cyborgs created by Dr. Zero. Finally, Cody often encounters the comically underpowered Nick D who seeks to collect a XStone to sell to support his orphanage and duels with him over them.
