Robot Ponkottsu Star Version is a turn-based RPG for Game Boy Color where you play as Cody, a kid inheriting a robot dispatch service. Your goal is to climb Porombo Island’s rankings by collecting and training mechanical creatures called Robopon. Battle the seven strongest trainers on the island in structured combat, using strategy to exploit type advantages and status effects. Progression focuses on capturing new Robopon, upgrading your roster, and learning patterns to counter opponents. The simple controls and bite-sized matches make it easy to pick up but the depth in team-building keeps things engaging. The game stands out for its charm and accessibility, blending kid-friendly visuals with classic RPG mechanics. While not as widely known as other 90s JRPGs, its straightforward design and gradual difficulty curve have earned it a niche following. Fans of handheld RPGs with a focus on collection and tactics might find it familiar but distinctive, particularly for its quirky robot designs and island setting. The Star Version adds exclusive units and challenges compared to earlier releases in the trilogy, offering a modest but complete package for completionists.
Within Robopon Sun, Star, and Moon versions, the player assumes the role of a child named Cody, whose grandpa is retiring and gives him the family business, a Robopon Dispatching Company. Cody travels around Porombo Island collecting Robopon and battling against the "Legend 7", the top-ranked Robopon collectors on the island. Each time Cody successfully beats one of the Legend 7, he takes his or her place in the ranking system.
