"You can play regular chess, too, and it works, though there's an utter lack of inspiration behind the little battles between the chess pieces. Worse, the AI isn't going to throw up a challenge to anyone but the most beginner of chess beginners. Finally, it's all terribly ugly, most notably with the backgrounds, where we're meant to be able to fight in "towns", "graveyards", "castles" and other locations, but in practice, the developer just has just dropped a differently-shaped rock here and there and called it a day. There are exceptional options for chess on the Switch. Pawn of the Dead, meanwhile, is one of the poorest games on the console."

Rock of the Dead fuses rhythm gameplay with third-person shooting. You destroy waves of enemies using motion-controlled guitar and drum inputs. Each weapon fires notes instead of bullets, syncing attacks to the beat. The story mode supports two-player co-op where you alternate between rhythm-based combat and driving. Tracks range from reworked classical compositions to aggressive rock songs by Rob Zombie and others. The game leans into its quirky concept with style. Voice acting from Neil Patrick Harris and Felicia Day adds humor to absurd scenarios like battling zombie conductors. Boss fights require timing-heavy rhythm sequences to break weak points. While 2010 reviews praised its creativity, control quirks on the Wii version drew criticism. The mix of music and mayhem remains a niche but energetic experience.
