"One of modern gaming's true multiplayer success stories, Rocket League is an essential addition to the Switch's striking year-one library. Analyse every screenshot and video and yes, you'll spot visual downgrades when compared to the other console editions, but what's key here is that the spirit of the game has been transferred perfectly, with the added benefit of portable play which opens up the chance to host local matches with your Switch owning mates wherever and whenever you fancy. Developer Panic Button has done an utterly fantastic job with this port, but technical wizardry aside, what really matters is that the core game is so addictive, so compelling, so enjoyable and – perhaps above all else – so deep. Don't let anyone tell you that Rocket League is simplistic or lacks longevity; the vibrant community that has grown up around Psyonix's masterpiece renders that viewpoint wholly incorrect. This is a game that rewards skilful play and perseverance, and new tactics and strategies seem to flow from each and every match you partake in. Only the occasional network niggle throws shade on this otherwise sublime release; the Switch has yet another must-have release to add to its awe-inspiring 2017 pile."

About Rocket League

Rocket League launched on July 6, 2015 as a high-octane mashup of racing and soccer developed by Psyonix. You drive rocket-powered cars to hit a giant ball into the opposing goal. The game supports cross-platform play across PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Switch, PC, Mac, and Linux. It started as an indie project before exploding into a global phenomenon with a massive player base. This title strips away complex sports simulations for pure vehicular chaos. You can jump in for a quick match or spend hours grinding through seasons. The physics engine handles everything from aerial flips to bumper cars without feeling clunky.

Gameplay

Every match feels like playing soccer while piloting a tank. You boost to gain speed, use the car's hitbox to deflect shots, and attempt complex air dribbles to score goals. The game offers standard online matches, split-screen co-op, and a dedicated offline Season Mode with Mutators that completely alter the rules. You might play hockey-style modes or basketball variations alongside the main objective. Controls are simple enough for anyone to pick up, but mastering aerial mechanics takes hundreds of hours. A typical session involves rushing to defend your goal, catching the ball mid-air, and slamming it past the opponent. The physics system ensures every collision feels weighty and unpredictable.

What Players Think

Critics have been overwhelmingly positive with Metacritic at 86 and OpenCritic at 87 out of 100. IGN gave it a 93 while Kotaku awarded a perfect score, noting its appeal extends well beyond casual crowds. The PlayPile community currently shows a cozy vibe among the four logged players who average 3.2 hours in this title. Nostalgia and emotion also appear as common themes in user reviews. Achievements are challenging to master since the rarest trophy "Winning is Winning" has only a 3.70% unlock rate out of 88 total. The average completion rate sits at 39.3%, suggesting many players stick around for the long haul. Twitch viewership remains strong with the game ranking number 37 in current trends.

PlayPile's Take

This is a solid pick if you want competitive multiplayer that respects your time. You get immediate action without needing deep lore or complex tutorials. The price point is reasonable considering the hundreds of customization options available. Most players struggle to unlock the rarest achievements, which adds a layer of long-term grind for completionists. If you dislike repetitive loops in sports games, this might feel too similar after a while. However, the skill ceiling remains high enough to keep matches fresh for years. Stick with it if you enjoy team-based strategy and physics-based chaos.
